UAE-Turkmen relations deeply-rooted, promising

ABU DHABI, The UAE-Turkmen relations are developing steadily thanks to the support provided by the wise leadership of the two countries and their desire to develop co-operation in all domains.

The official visits and diplomatic relations between the two countries have translated the strong ties, especially after the visit of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Turkmenistan and meeting with President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow in February 2013, during which a number of agreements in the trade sectors was signed.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries date back to 1995 when the UAE supported the United Nations’ recognition of the international legal status as the “permanent neutrality” of the State of Turkmenistan.

In 2002, the UAE embassy opened in Ashgabat, the capital city of Turkmenistan.

Since that date, mutual visits by officials from both countries at various levels of ministerial and specialised committees have not stopped, leading to the activation of bilateral economic, trade, investment and cultural co-operation agreements.

The year 2012 witnessed a turning point in the bilateral relations when the two sides agreed to set up a joint committee to develop cooperation across multiple field to the higher good of the two peoples.

The committee aimed to streamline the exchange of information and expertise and ensure further collaboration.

The two countries inked an array of agreements, Memorandums of Understanding, to support joint aimed at establishing joint projects in the energy field and process industries sector, as well as opening up more channels of coordination in various political, economic, trade and investment fields in the best interest of the two countries and their peoples.

The UAE is among the top five trading partners of Turkmenistan, which imports its needs of electrical equipment, electronics, high technology, trucks, cars and others from the UAE.

Turkmenistan is one of the most promising countries on the economic level, while the UAE provides excellent environment for the Turkmen business community as many Turkmen investments and companies are managed successfully through its offices in the UAE.
