Etihad Airways wins airline strategy Award

WAM Abu Dhabi: Etihad Airways, last night won the finance category of the Airline Strategy Awards, one of the industry’s most coveted awards.

The award, announced in front of the world’s leading airline figures at London’s The Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, recognised the strategic contribution the finance team has made to the success of Etihad Airways.

The award was accepted by James Rigney, Etihad Airways Chief Financial Officer, who said: “Our expert team plays a key role in the business achieving its financial goals, most notably in beating Etihad Airways’ break even target in 2011 to record the airline’s first ever profit. This award is testament to the efficiency of the financial strategies put in place by the management team over many years.

“As we deliver our objective of sustained profitability, finance will continue to support the business through its innovative approach. Our robust financial planning and management will also help us to meet the airline’s ambitious business and financial goals.” Etihad Airways’ finance team has played an important part in supporting the rapid growth of the airline while developing strong financial planning, procurement, cost control and financial governance through the implementation of cost benchmarking, budgeting and budgetary controls. Strong relationships have also been built up with the global financial markets to support Etihad’s aircraft financing, treasury and hedging activities.

Khalifa University Students enjoy field trips and internships Around the World

WAM Abu Dhabi: Khalifa University students have participated in over ten field trips and internships in the United States, Europe and Asia over the last three months.

Student groups have recently travelled to the United States and South Korea to conduct research and visit state of the art industry laboratories and manufacturing facilities, while individual students headed off to participate in internships in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Singapore and Turkey.

Ten freshman and sophomore students travelled to Seoul, South Korea as part of a nine day field trip to learn about semiconductors. The trip was organized in conjunction with the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association (KSIA), who trained the student’s on semiconductor and nanotechnology practice. The students also visited the high-tech Korea National Nano Fabrication Laboratory and industry giant, Samsung Electronics, and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.

Khalifa Universities Biomedical Engineering Department also organized a three week research/clinical experience trip this summer to the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in the United States.

Twelve students interested in pursuing careers in the biomedical/medical fields were posted in different research labs at the Biomedical Engineering Department of Georgia Tech, and worked directly with Ph.D. students and Georgia Tech faculty. They researched a wide range of subjects including: Cardiovascular Biology, Biomechanics, Neuro-engineering, Cellular and Molecular Engineering, Biomaterials, and Medical Imaging and Regenerative Medicine Integrative Bio-systems and were exposed to cutting edge, state-of-the-art biomedical/clinical research.

Dr. Mohammed Al Mualla, Senior Vice President of Research and Development and Interim Provost said, “Field trips like these offer our students un-paralleled opportunities to receive real world experience and increase their knowledge of their chosen field of study through interaction with industry and academic professionals and their peers from around the world.” WAM/AM

Indian Business and Professional Group reviews experiences of business in UAE

WAM Abu Dhabi: Indian Business and Professional Group has reviewed experiences of a number of Indian businessmen and investors in the UAE during a meeting held under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Nahyan Al Nahyan at the “Millennium Hotel” in Abu Dhabi.

The meeting was attended by a number of Indian businessmen and investors working in the UAE. Mohan Jashanmal, Chairman of the group hailed the distinguished historical trade relations between the UAE and India since the era of late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

He pointed out that the volume of trade exchange between UAE and India last year was amounted to about US $ 34.8 billion.

“My Country’s Summer” organising committee briefed on various activities

WAM Sharjah: Dr. Habib Ghuloom al Attar, Vice-President of the Organizing Committee of the National Program “My Country’s Summer” which is organized by Ministry of Culture, Youth ‘&’ Community Development has affirmed that it is the prime responsibility of all participating entities and institutions to take care of the innovators who are the future of the country and should support the new generation in order to maintain the achievements of the wise leadership.

Dr Habib, who is also the general coordinator of the committee made these remarks during his tour of the Fujairah Culture Centre and other 55 centers nationwide.

He was briefed on participants, volunteers and supervisors’ opinions on the events as well as ways to develop them to achieve the strategic goals of ” My Country’s Summer” program. They also reviewed arts, cultural, sports and entertainment activities.

GCAA holds Safety Workshop with Emirates

WAM Dubai: In line with the General Civil Aviation Authority’s (GCAA) State Safety Program, GCAA and Emirates Airline Safety Workshop was held at Emirates Headquarter recently.

The workshop, which was well attended by members from both sides, is a part of GCAA’s safety initiative in support of State Safety Programme (SSP) implementation.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of GCAA, mentioned that the UAE is among the leading states internationally in the active participation and implementation of State Safety Program. He added that UAE was appointed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to be part of an international group to promote the implementation of SSP.

Ismaeil Mohammed Al Balooshi, Executive Director, Aviation Safety Affairs Sector, in his opening address underlined the importance of SSP as an umbrella for managing aviation safety within UAE. He assured the audience that GCAA is fully committed to development of safety management system (SMS) across the industry.

He stressed the need for frequent engagement with industry which is essential for ensuring effective implementation of Safety Management System. He also emphasized that success of SSP will depend on the quality of SMS data integration with the stake holders.

The audience was briefed on the achievements made so far in the development of SSP as well as the importance of identifying hazards and reporting of hazards by the airline operators to the regulator.

Emirates Airlines Safety Group also presented their roles and tasks followed by their current practices with respect to procedures for identifying safety objectives.

Fujairah CP receives Ambassador of Belgium

WAM Fujairah: H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah this afternoon at his office in the Emiri Court, received Annick Van Kalstr, Ambassador of Belgium to the State who paid a courtesy call on him.

He welcomed the ambassador of Belgium stressing the distinguished UAE-Belgian relations and country’s’ keenness to boost and develop them.

The meeting dealt with issues of common concern between the two countries and ways to improve relations at all levels.

For her part, the Belgian Ambassador expressed her thanks to Fujairah Crown Prince for the warm welcome highlighting strong political, economic and social relations between the two countries.
