CCTV+: China Media Group president delivers New Year message to global audience

BEIJING, Jan. 1, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — China Media Group (CMG) President Shen Haixiong addressed the global audience on the first day of 2022, with the focus on the reflection of the CMG’s work over the past year and the group’s great roles in future news coverage.

“The New Year’s first ray of sunshine is illuminating the world. The new year is the Year of the Tiger on the Chinese lunar calendar. I would like to extend my best wishes from Beijing, wishing you a year full of prosperity and vitality!” Shen said.

Noting that the CMG has served as a witness to the remarkable past and recorded the country’s achievements through its dedicated work, Shen said that China’s overseas broadcasting services will continue this in 2022.

Shen also said that presenting China’s stories well to global audiences remains the CMG’s mission.

The CMG president said that reporting based on facts should be the fundamental principle of global journalists, and in the meantime, the group has debunked lies and myths in news stories regarding issues such as COVID-19 and Afghanistan.

He said the group has established a diverse and inclusive cooperation mechanism with international media partners.

The CMG president also referred to China’s scheduled hosting of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Games – the world’s biggest sporting event of 2022.

Shen said China Media Group is ready to bring the event to global audiences, with cutting-edge technologies and its newly-launched Olympic Channel.

“During the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, CMG broadcast the world’s first live coverage of Olympic events on a 4K Ultra HD channel. The channel attracted more than 400 million viewers within three months of its launch. In just over 30 days, the Olympic flame will once again be lit in Beijing, during Chinese New Year. With the technologies of ‘5G+4K/8K+AI’, CMG has set up a livestreaming carriage on the high-speed train from Beijing to Zhangjiakou, Hebei province. It’s the first tech solution in the world to record and broadcast with Ultra HD streaming on high-speed trains,” Shen said.

Shen also said that in 2022, the CPC will hold its 20th National Congress to draw a blueprint for China’s future.

40 Abu Dhabi International Airport celebrates years of development

Abu Dhabi Airports Sunday marked the 40th anniversary of the official opening of Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH), celebrating its contributions to the remarkable ascension of Abu Dhabi as a centre for aviation, trade and tourism.

“Abu Dhabi International Airport has connected the world to Abu Dhabi for 40 years and fuelled the emirate’s emergence as a leading destination for tourism, trade and commerce. It was the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan who had the foresight to build the airport, and thanks to his vision Abu Dhabi Airports has built a legacy forged by collaboration, innovation and service. It is a legacy that will continue to grow over the next 40 years, as it supports the ongoing social and economic development of Abu Dhabi and the UAE,” said Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Airports.

The airport was first proposed in 1974, in response to the government’s plans to modernise the newly formed UAE. Construction of the airport began in 1979, and the new Abu Dhabi International Airport was officially opened on 2nd January 1982, featuring a circular satellite terminal with a single connection to a semi-circular terminal.

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, the terminal was expanded to cater to the increase in passenger numbers. Etihad became the national carrier and the home airline in 2003, which was a catalyst for rapid growth and paved the way for the opening of Terminal 2 in September 2005, a second runway in 2008 and Terminal 3 in January 2009, boosting the airport’s capacity to 12 million passengers per year.

The airport has also been home to a number of firsts. In 2014, AUH introduced the first United States border pre-clearance facilities in the Middle East to aid in the processing of passengers on direct flights for entry into the United States before they boarded their planes.

Also, AUH launched the Smart Travel System in 2016, the first of its kind in the region, to ease passenger processing and improve the customer experience. During the early onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, AUH was among the first to introduce contactless gates and touchless elevators to complement its wide array of health and safety measures.

“Abu Dhabi International has a proud history of providing world-class infrastructure and top-flight service, whilst serving as a catalyst for growth for 40 of our proud nation’s 50 years of achievement,” noted Shareef Al Hashmi, CEO, Abu Dhabi Airports. “As consumer confidence rebounds and traffic gradually recovers, we will continue to explore new technologies, products and ways of doing business that will drive improved sustainability and create industry-leading airport experiences. As proud as we are of our past achievements, we are equally excited about our bright future.”

Kuwait orders schools shut Monday amid deluge

Kuwait will close schools and universities nationwide for a day due to unstable weather conditions, the country’s education minister said on Sunday.

All middle and high school exams scheduled for Monday will be postponed, Dr. Ali Al-Mudhaf said in a statement, giving schools the leeway to rearrange their final exams as they see fit, the dates of which will be released in a ministry statement later on Sunday, according to the Kuwait News Agency.

The day off does not include faculty and staff, who are still required to go to work on Monday, added the statement.

Heavy rains lashed much of Kuwait on Sunday, flooding roads and disrupting traffic across the country.
